Four Times Sophie Devereaux Got Shot (And One Time She Didn't)
Title: Four Times Sophie Devereaux Got Shot (And One Time She Didn't)
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Leverage
Pairing: Sophie Devereaux/Nate Ford
Spoilers: Mentions pilot flashback, vague mentions of season 2.
Summary: She vows to never get shot again. It isn't a vow she keeps.
Notes: Thanks to cartography for listening to me whine and checking characters and keeping Sophie properly British. ♥ This is my first Leverage fic. Apparently I have to play with characters whenever I fall in love with them.

The first time she gets shot, it's from a con gone wrong. No one is perfect when they start, most aren't even good. Some just get wounded less fatally than others.

The con went wrong fast, and although she still doesn't quite know all the details as to why she knows she'll never let it happen again. She ends up in her back-up apartment, a ratty, rundown thing. She takes out the bullet herself, because she can't risk going to a hospital, and she feels like a common criminal. (She's not common, and she never thinks of herself as a criminal. Criminals stab and shoot people. She doesn't do that.)

That's the day she becomes Sophie Devereaux. She buries the other alias because it's too tainted and picks up a new name and starts creating the character with bloody rags wrapped around her arm. In time the scar will fade. It has to, because Sophie isn't one to get shot up.

She vows to never get shot again.

It isn't a vow she keeps.

The second time Sophie gets shot, she shoots first. Nathan Ford is a frustrating man who seems intent on following her around the world. It isn't like his company doesn't have the money to shell out for the paintings she's taking.

The worst part is, she's getting to know Nathan. After all, you don't travel around the world being followed by a person without having a few conversations.

As a grifter she doesn't have friends. Her characters have friends, and they have lovers, but she can't afford any of those things. They would only blow her cover. She doesn't miss the irony that Nate is the only person who is constantly around her. The only person that even begins to come close to being a friend.

Then he put a bullet through her shoulder. Wanker.

"I can't believe you did that!" she exclaims, grunting as she presses her hand over the wound and barely manages to stay on her feet.

"You shot first!" he yells back. "I told you to freeze."

"I can't believe you shot me," she says. She really can't. It's a mistake, she knows, because that's exactly what he's here to do. It's what he's always been here to do. Along the way, though, she's started to forget that. She's started to enjoy his chase and forget about the danger in it.

He sinks down to sit on the couch and she stays standing. She doesn't miss that he still has the gun in his hand, but there's not much point it. She can't possibly get the painting out of the frame properly now, and she doesn't want it if it isn't perfect.

"You didn't exactly give me a lot of choice," he says.

"You could have waited a few minutes," she huffs. "I would have been gone." They both know he couldn't do that, wouldn't do it.

"I'm not your friend, Sophie."

That burns her, and she shoves away the feeling. "Excuse me?"

"I'm not your friend," he repeats. "I've been chasing you for a reason, and it's not for fun."

She glares at him because giving into her anger is the right response. "Oh? Then why haven't you shot me before? What, the boss doesn't like how much time you're spending with me?"

She means it sarcastically, but the way he looks away tells more than he means it to. "My god!" she exclaims, "It's true! You shot me to get in with your boss! Oh, that is low."

"You shot me first," he says. "Or are we just going to ignore that?"

She takes steps closer and closer to him, her eyes narrowed. He looks shocked when she slaps him. Or, she imagines he would. She uses the distraction to get away.

(She knows that if he wanted to, he could have caught her.)

The third time she gets shot, it's because she's recognized in the middle of the con.

"Sophie? Soph? Come on, stay awake."

"I don't have a bloody concussion," she mutters. Nate's hand is over her stomach, covered in her blood.

Her head lulls back against his chest. She can feel her senses and her mind beginning to wane, but right now she's warm and, absurdly, she feels safe.

"I'm sorry, Nate."

He lets out a strained laugh. "I don't think I've ever heard you apologize."

"There's a first time for everything," she says. Every word feels like an effort, but she can't stop talking. She can't just leave Nate here. There's a silence that passes and it says too much.

Nate lowers his head so that his lips are right beside her ear. "Sophie..."

She knows that voice. It's the one she's heard on drunken voice mails but rarely hears when she's this close to him. She closes her eyes.

"No, Nate."

"I know." She reaches a hand up and ignores the pain that shoots through her body. Her fingers rest against his stubble and he closes his eyes.

"You didn't have this remorse when you shot me," she says. He laughs.

"That was a long time ago."

"A lifetime," she agrees.

"A few lifetimes." His lips are so close to her, she can feel his breath against her skin. She can smell the brandy on it. She shifts so she's closer to him, her lips just inches from his.

This isn't how she wants to die. She doesn't want to be another burden on his shoulders, and she's afraid that she'll be one weight too many.

"Nate, tell the team-"

"Excuse me?"

"No, Sophie." The hand that isn't trying to keep all of her blood inside of her is rubbing against her face and she instinctively turns into the gesture. "They'll get us out."

"Since when are you an optimist?" she asks dryly. Her vision is beginning to black out but she refuses to go yet. Sophie Devereaux doesn't take her exit until she's good and ready to.

"I'm not." His voice is rough. "You're not going to die."

"Despite what you may think, you're not God, Nate."

He shifts her gently, and she finds herself staring him right in the face. She leans forward and brushes her lips against his. She doesn't deepen the kiss, can't, but it feels more intimate than any other moment they've shared.

"You're not going to die," he repeats.

She closes her eyes. "Has anyone ever told you you're a stubborn bastard?"

His grip on her tightens and she half expects him to shake her back awake. "You're just as stubborn. Please, Sophie."

She slips into the blackness.

When she wakes up there are fluorescent lights overhead and the sound of a monitor beeping beside her. She blinks, trying to push the grogginess of drugs running through her system away. When she turns her head to take in her room, she sees the black mess of hair lying against her arm and the man its attached to.

Nate is asleep against her arm, and they're in a hospital.

"Nate," she croaks. He shifts with an unappreciative grumble. When he opens his eyes he jerks up and stares at her.

"Hey. How are you feeling?"

"Why are we here?"

"You got shot," he says.

"It isn't safe," she argues. "We shouldn't-"

"It's fine. Hardison made some personas." Nate swallows. "You needed to be here. We didn't have the right equipment. You almost..."

He doesn't finish, but he doesn't have to. She nods and runs a hand through his hair. He closes his eyes and releases a shuddering breath.

"Sophie-" his voice sounds broken.

"Come here," she murmurs, carefully pulling him up so that they're face to face. She shifts back on the small bed and takes his hand in hers. She rests her cheek against the top of his hand and tugs him forward a little.

Understanding, he rests his face against the bed in front of her. She's already almost asleep.

"I'm sorry you're in a hospital," she murmurs.

His hand clenches around hers.

"There are worse places to be."

The fourth time she gets shot, Nate shoots her. Again.

"I'm am going to kill you," she mutters between gritted teeth. "Or have Eliot kill you. I know a man who loves to chase his victims for days beforehand and-"

"You know I had to. How is it?"

"You shot me in the leg!"

"I'll owe you one," he offers.

"'Owe me one'," she mutters. "Like you skimped out on paying for a date. There's a bullet in my leg!"

"Actually, it just grazed you, and if I hadn't taken the shot we'd both be in jail. This way we can get out alive," he says. He's annoyingly condescending for someone who just shot her and is still trying to play the white knight card.

"If you had played your character properly this wouldn't be a problem!" she yells. "I told you, all you ever manage to play is obnoxious. Being loveable is not your forte."

He frowns. "I can be loveable-"

"The bullet in my leg begs to differ! Next time you play the 'bad guy'."

"It's not that bad," he says, his hands running over the wound that will take at least a few weeks to heal. She certainly can't get cast in anything with a limp, which is just another reason why this is so incredibly annoying. "It just grazed you."

"It grazed me and my very fashionable trousers. You know what bullet holes do for fashion? Not a lot, Nate. Not a lot."

He lets out a huff of air. "I will buy you new pants. Shh, they're coming."

She lets out a yell of pain and collapses back so that the mark won't know the difference.

Later, outside Hardison's van, she lets out an eerily similar scream. "I can't believe you shot me!"

"You shot Sophie?" Eliot asks, his arms crossing over his chest as Sophie gets into the van and Nate gets blocked from it.

"It just grazed-" Nate starts.

"He shot you?" Parker asks. The entire team glares at him in impressive unison. "You know, if you leave a body with a note by a stolen artifact cops almost always make assumptions."

"I can hack his credit for you," Hardison announces.

"I had to do it!" Nate groans.

She smirks triumphantly at him.

The fifth time Sophie gets shot at, she doesn't get shot.

"You moron," she mutters. "I would have been fine."

Nate shakes his head. He's sweating and pale and in more pain than he'd ever admit to and she hates him for keeping it to himself. "You're too short. It would have hit your heart."

"Oh, so it just almost hit your heart? That's brilliant. We all take risks, you know that. We all-"

"Not if you don't have to," he says. "No one should take an unnecessary risk."

"Like jumping in front of a bullet?" she demands. "Like that sort of unnecessary risk?"

"Like dying," he replies. His teeth are gritted and he actually has the nerve to seem angry when he's the one being idiotic.

"I would have moved," she argues. "I had time."

"Maybe," he murmurs, his eyes closing. His breathing begins to get more ragged.

She slaps him.

His eyes open, shocked, and she glares at him. "Nathan Ford, you are not dying on me. You're a thief now. You're not allowed to pull this white knight routine and then be a martyr too. You are not allowed to die like this. You hear me? You're not allowed-"

He kisses her. It's sloppy and uncoordinated and the single most powerful kiss she's ever felt.

She pulls back (oxygen isn't something he has any right to be wasting right now,) and kisses his forehead and his temples and over his eyes.

"I owed you one, remember?" he murmurs, voice too unsteady.

"Oh, that just grazed me," she mutters. He laughs softly.

"I told you!"

"Really?" she asks. "You're going to be smug now?"

"Seems like as good a time as any," he says, grinning.

She shakes her head and cradles him against her as much as she can. "Come on, Nate," she murmurs, over and over. "Come on."

Eliot is even rougher than usual when he breaks them out. When they get to the hospital she announces that she's his wife and lets Hardison figure how to not get them arrested. She sleeps by his bedside, against his shoulder.

He wakes up a day later.

"Soph?" he asks. "Did we get the mark?"

"Yeah. Eliot handled it his way, but maybe terrorizing him was the right way to go," she says. She takes his hand in both of hers. "How are you feeling?"

"Alive. Fine. Didn't die."

"No, you didn't."

She leans forward and kisses his forehead before lightly grazing his lips.

"Get some sleep, Nate."

He smiles a little too widely, too openly. (She knows that's the drugs, but they're only making him more open not changing his emotions towards her. Something in her stomach clenches at the sight.)

"Night, Sophie."

"You'll be back on your feet in no time," she promises.

"And you?" he asks, and she knows that's the drugs too.

"I'll be there," she says softly. "Have been for awhile."

He's still smiling widely.

"Oh, and Nate?" she asks, just as she's at his doorway. "You never owed me one."

I love it :) You've got their voices down perfectly, and it's the right amount of sweetness, humour, and the perfect balance for their relationship. Would love to see more of your stuff.

I'm so glad I read this. The insanely in-character banter? Just the right amount of tenderness balanced by just the right amount shippy and teamy goodness and everything else? Oh, yes please.

"It grazed me and my very fashionable trousers. You know what bullet holes do for fashion? Not a lot, Nate. Not a lot."

LOL, just, just...awesome. I want to buy you a drink for writing this.

But really, this is just beautiful, and not just because I love me some hurt!Nate. You have their voices wonderfully, and the every situation seems like it could have come from the show.

I love hurt Sophie more than I love hurt Nate because then Nate has to be all caring and upset and yesssss....... So thank you for writing this. I enjoyed reading it.

Aw, thank you! I'm always a little nervous about making something too emotional and knocking it out of character by accident. So I'm really glad you liked that one. Thanks for reading! :)
